Everlasting Friendship

“ Compassion makes us break through the distance of pity and bring our human vulnerabilities into a healing closeness to our aging brother and sister”. Henri Nouwen

Friends & volunteers of Enoch Society believe in walking with our elderly together in the aging journey. When we support and give encouragement to an aging person who is grieving over lost of health and control over life, we are also preparing ourselves to such journey in time to come. We believe in sharing the love of Christ through giving our time in visiting the lonely elders or praying with them, there are no distinctions between the givers and receivers. We are all receivers of God’s grace through Jesus. It’s our prayer that when our lives are filled by His grace, they will bring blessings to where we they are needed most. When we share caring friendship with our elderly friends in needs, we know our Lord is in our midst and His kingdom has come.

Faith In The Lord

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16

When we were children, we like to hear our elders telling us “stories” & we could not wait to hear how the stories end. Now we are older, we have our own families, careers and sphere of influences; do we need our elders’ stories? I think deep inside, we still want to hear their stories in how they make life choices & how they face when time is coming to an earthy end. Enoch Society works to build up elderly disciples, those whose faith in the Lord are renewed everyday in spite of the various physical & mental declines. We want to hear stories of how in sunset years one can lives larger than life because of their faith in the Lord. Helping and supporting our elderly to sustain them for the faith in the Lord is not merely to prepare them for the eternal life after earthy death. Rather, it’s to prepare them for the most severe battle of their lives, to help them to make each days and hours count for the glory of Jesus. Their sunset year testimonies of their faith in the Lord would be the most glorious stories, their gift to the younger generations to come.

Internal Peace

About death I go through different moods, but the times when I can desire it are never, I think, those when this world seems harshest. On the contrary, it is just when there seems to be most of Haven already here that I come nearest to longing for a patria (homeland).” CS Lewis on death

Many of different cultures, religions and ages struggle to have peace. Some believe by abstaining from wants we attain a state of peace. Some by absorbing in passionate pursuits when one is lost in time, and hence free of anguish. Our faith in Christ allows us to face life as it is, that it comes and pass us by with triumph moments as well as regrets. We believe in God’s mercy. Our time on earth allow opportunities for us to face our wounds & brokenness and ultimately be healed and before our departures. Like Moses in the old testimony, it is possible to have a glimpse of the promised land during our life on earth when reconciliation are made, sins forgiven, broken relations mended. Enoch Society would want to provide spiritual support for the spiritual healing of our elderly friends. We believe our sunset years on earth is meant to manifest divine blessings, when one can achieve internal peace not of this world, but from eternity through our Lord Jesus.

Eternal Hope

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:1-6

One cannot live without hope of some kinds. It is however not enough for human to live just for surviving. Often we found that when the temporal hope of getting success, wealth and life comforts were reached, we are left in utter disillusion. Life felt fragmented with no focus or lasting meanings. The hope in the Lord gives those who believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ a hope that anchors in eternity. This eternal hope makes our earthy journey purposeful; it gives direction and fulfillment we are all going Home to our Heavenly Father! Our life on earth are story, it has its schemed beginning and the designated end. Our elderly are possible authors of the eternal hopes like those characters mentioned in the book of Hebrews. How our stories end speak of the present or the absent of an eternal hope that again bring messages to the next generations.

Genuine Purpose

I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Genesis 28:14-16

Some people depart life on earth at younger age. Some live a long biological life. We believe that even our hair is counted by God and we are wonderfully and fearfully made. We are our Heavenly Father beloved children. Our lives have purposes & meanings for His kingdom and glory. The fact that some of us live a ripe old age speaks of a unique calling and divine mission in one’s old age. In many encounters with older people, I am touched in the most unexpected way. Like strings of the violin, they play a beautiful symphony of life. I remember in a remote village in China, an elderly widow who lives on subsistent farming hosted us the overseas visitors a most splendid afternoon tea with roasted chestnuts and hot tea boiled made from an earthy stove. On another occasion, our volunteers made visit to some elderly friends in an improvised care facility in the countryside on a cold winter day. After help making dumplings, a resident in limping steps brought out a basin of hot water (from her hot water thermos) for us to wash our hands. Stories like this stay with us. They are like road signs. They touch us & keep pointing us to go on with our mission in reaching out to the isolated elderly. We are here to help each other and particularly our older friends to discover God’s calling where genuine purpose and fulfillment can be found in one’s old age years.
